Smithfield was organized March 13, 1807, Being set off from Cazenovia. It derives its name from Peter Smith, who at the time of the organization was owner of all the land contained in the town, expect a few farms which he had sold to settlers and a strip one mile wide across the northern end. Peter SMITH born near Tappan, Rockland County., NY, was founder of Smithfield.
Monthly Town Board Meeting is held the second Tuesday of each month at 7 PM.
