During the period of 1852 to 1953 naturalization of aliens occurred at the county level. Both Declarations of Intent and Petitions for Naturalization were filed in the local courts. The County Clerk was, and currently is, the Clerk of the Courts and as such these records are maintained by the County Clerk's office. We are fortunate to have 27 volumes of naturalization records as well as many hundreds of unbound documents (some as early as 1819) relating to the naturalization process.
