Beaches, Pools & Water Parks
We provide guidance to Operators on health and safety issues. Environmental Health staff:
- Issue permits and inspects beaches, pools, and water parks annually
- Review safety plans, lifeguard credentials, and water quality reports for regulation compliance
- Observe lifeguard and safety drills during inspections
- Provide guidance to operators related to health and safety issues
- Review safety plans, lifeguard credentials, and water quality reports as applicable

Be Aware for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs)
Algae and Harmful Algae Blooms may occur at bathing beaches.
Avoid it.
- Stay out of the water if you see discolored water, surface scums, or other signs of algae blooms.
- Always look for signs at beaches and follow advisories.
- If a beach is closed due to a HAN, do not swim until it has been officially reopened. Reopening typically occurs after the bloom has cleared for at least 24 hours and bathing water sample results are below the levels of concern.

Report it.
- If you suspect you have seen a Harmful Algal Bloom; avoid the area and report it immediately.
- To report suspected HABs, you should:
- Notify Madison County Health Department at 315-366-2526 AND
- Fill out and submit a DEC Suspicious Algal Bloom Report Form (leaves DEC website).
- If possible, attach digital photos (close-up and landscape to show extent and location) of the suspected HAB in the web form. If you are not able to complete the form, email the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
