Last week, construction crews working on the renovations of the County Courthouse took down the scaffolding around the dome, and now on full display is a new copper dome.
The Dome for years was painted gold and would require maintenance every few years. Crews worked hard to place the copper on the dome so now it will not require any maintenance for 75-100 years. And over time the copper will patina, like the Statue of Liberty.
In 1910, when President Taft visited Madison County he was quoted as saying “I want to congratulate you and the rest of the people of Madison County on your handsome new Courthouse”. Just a year prior in 1909 the work on the roof including the placing of expanded metal, painting and placement of the Lady Justice statue was completed.
Now, over a hundred years later, the dome has reached another milestone.
Stay tuned for more updates on the renovations happening in Wampsville. And in the meantime don’t forget to stop by and check out the new look of the Madison County Courthouse Dome.
