Members from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office joined members of the NYS DEC Environmental Conservation Police and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office for the 2nd annual Madison/Oneida County Youth Turkey Hunt. This program was started a number of years ago, but last year was the first year it expanded to include Madison County. The program’s goals are to promote conservation, the outdoors, and firearm safety through mentors from each law enforcement agency. The youths are taken on a two-day turkey hunt in Madison and Oneida Counties, guided by their mentors. This year’s Madison County Sheriff’s Office mentors included Sergeant Chapman and Deputies Durant, Garofalo and Seymore. In all, 19 youths participated, many returning hunters and some first-time participants. Over half of the youth hunters had an opportunity to harvest a turkey, and all of them learned a great deal. The program was a great success and our members are looking forward to seeing many familiar faces next year.
