At today's press conference, Sheriff Hood presented statistics regarding firearm-related activity in NYS.
From DCJS (Division of Criminal Justice Services) - The GIVE initiative targets 20 jurisdictions within 17 counties upstate and on Long Island. The GIVE totals in this report include data from all 20 GIVE jurisdictions however only 14 agencies are shown separately: Albany, Buffalo, Hempstead, Mount Vernon, Nassau County, Newburgh, Niagara Falls, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, Schenectady, Suffolk County, Syracuse, Utica and Yonkers. Shootings in the following jurisdictions appear in the “All Other Give PDs” line on page 2 of this report: Binghamton City, Jamestown City, Kingston City, Middletown City, Spring Valley Village, and Troy City PDs.
GIVE JURISDICTIONS REPORTED 765 SHOOTING INCIDENTS INVOLVING INJURY THROUGH AUGUST 2020, UP (+80%) WHEN COMPARED TO 2019 (425). Shooting incidents were up (+48%) compared to the five-year average (518).
SHOOTING VICTIMS (PERSONS HIT) INCREASED 88.5 PERCENT (931) THROUGH AUGUST 2020, WHEN COMPARED TO 2019 (494). Shooting victims were up (+54.5%) compared to the five-year average (603).
