Precarious Work Schedules and Population Health.
Almost 60 percent of the U.S. labor force is paid by the hour. While unstable and unpredictable work schedules have become the new normal for many hourly workers, so have the negative health consequences:
- Economic insecurity and work-life conflict;
- Poor mental and physical health outcomes in adults;
- Behavioral problems in young children.
What’s being done about it?
Six U.S. cities and one state have passed laws to regulate unstable and unpredictable work scheduling practices, and several firms have announced changes to scheduling practices. But there is still so much more that needs to be done.
