What can I do to reduce my exposure to pesticide sprays?
The New York State Department of Health provides a list of steps you can take before, after, and during aerial spraying for mosquitoes: What can I do if there is spraying in my community? (PDF)
Although your chances of experiencing any health effects from spraying are low, below are some simple precautions that you can take to minimize pesticide exposure when aerial spraying occurs.
- Consider staying indoors during spraying and for about 30 minutes after spraying.
If you have asthma or other respiratory conditions, stay inside. - Set the air conditioner vent to the closed position or choose the recirculate function.
- Outdoor equipment and toys that are exposed to the pesticides are not a significant health risk. There could be some residue for a short period of time. Although it is not necessary, you can wash the toys and equipment with soap and water.
- If you get sprayed directly:
- Protect your eyes. If you get pesticide spray in your eyes, rinse them immediately with water.
- Wash skin and clothing that have been exposed to pesticides with soap and water.
- Always wash your produce thoroughly with water before cooking or eating.
If you believe you are having a reaction to pesticides, call the Upstate Poison Control Center at :
1-800-222-1222.
Do I need to leave the area during aerial spraying?
No. You do not need to leave an area during aerial spraying.
- When applied by a licensed vector control professional who follows label instructions, aerial spraying poses minimal risk to people, pets, animals, and the environment.
- Aerial spraying uses very low volumes of adulticide, you aren’t likely to breathe or touch anything that has enough insecticide on it to harm you. There is a possibility of eye irritation if a person is outside when spraying takes place.
- If you have health concerns, refer back to the section above for steps you can take.

Disease Surveillance
Every year, the Division of Environmental Health collects local data for mosquito-borne disease surveillance during months with mosquito activity.
To control adult mosquitoes considered a public health threat carrying Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEv), West Nile Virus (WNV), or another mosquito-borne disease, pesticides may be used to interrupt the virus cycle in mosquito populations by temporarily reducing the numbers of mosquitoes available to spread virus to humans.
Aerial spraying is announced to the public through the news media, the Madison County, NY Facebook page, on the Madison County Public Health website, and by phone calls to the landlines in affected areas using the NY-Alert system. Residents in the spray area are encouraged to self-enroll in NY-Alert for receipt of emergency notifications to cell phones.
