Employment Policy

Employment Policy - Resolution # 11-2019

WHEREAS, all full time employees are entitled to vacations, sick leave, holidays, overtime pay and certain benefits, etc.

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the following policy be adopted.

 

Holidays

All full time highway employees shall be entitled to the following paid holidays:  New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, ½ day before Christmas, 1 floater.

 

Vacation

All full time highway employees shall earn vacation leave credits in accordance with the following schedule:

 

Completed years of Continuous Employment                    Days per year for full –time employees

 

After 1 year                                                                 5 days

After 2 years                                                                6 days

After 3 years                                                                7 days

After 4 years                                                                8 days

             5-10 years                                                                  10 days

            More than 10 years*                                                     15 days 


*(plus one day for every year of service over ten years not to exceed 20 days total per annum.)

           

Vacation pay will be based on an 8 hour day, 40 hour week.  Vacation time is non-cumulative and non-transferable.

 

Sick Days

All full time highway employees with more than one year of service shall be entitled to not more than 6 sick days per calendar year.  Sick days are non-cumulative and are not allowed to be used to extend vacation time.

 

Overtime

All employees shall be paid 1.5 times their regular rate of pay for work designated by the Highway Superintendent, to be preformed above 40 hours per week.

 

Health Insurance

All full time highway employees shall receive health insurance coverage for themselves and their families

Individual employee coverage: Town responsible for 90%, employee responsible for 10% of premium coverage.

Family coverage: Town responsible for 60%, employee responsible for 40% of premium coverage.

All other employees are eligible for coverage provided that premiums shall be paid 100% by the employee. (Insurance coverage will be negotiated with all new hires).

 

Health Insurance Buyout

Provided employee has proof of Health Insurance Coverage, full time employees’. electing not to receive Health Insurance from the town shall be eligible for additional compensation not to exceed $1,320.00 per year, paid out biweekly

 

Personal Leave 

All full time highway employees shall receive two (2) personal days per year.  Personal leave is non-cumulative and non-transferable.  Personal leave may not be used to extend vacations.  Personal leave may not be substituted for sick leave except when an employee has no remaining sick days.

 

Bereavement Leave

Up to three (3) work days shall be granted to all full time highway employees in the event of a death in the employee’s immediate family.

Immediate family shall be defined as:  mother, father, husband, wife, son, daughter, grandmother, grandfather, granddaughter, grandson, sister, brother.  The above terms shall include natural, in-law, and step relations.

 

Retiree’s Health/Dental Insurance Coverage

All full time highway employees who have completed at least twenty-five (25) years of full time continuous service shall be provided with individual health insurance coverage with one-hundred (100%) of said coverage to be paid by the Town of Smithfield.  The employee is responsible for any dependent coverage or family coverage.
