Tobacco Enforcement Programs

We provide technical assistance and education to employers, businesses, and the community on the Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA) and the Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act (ATUPA). Environmental Health staff:

  • Investigate possible violations of the acts
  • Provide public notification of violations and response actions in response to noncompliance

Purpose of Acts

The CIAA prohibits smoking in almost all places of employment, including restaurants and bars.

The Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act or ATUPA was enacted to help stop the sale of tobacco products and herbal cigarettes to anyone under the age of 18. Under the ATUPA program specifically, we:

  • Distribute educational information about ATUPA to tobacco vendors
  • Perform compliance checks for tobacco sales to minors at non-Indian facilities
  • Administer fines to non-compliant vendors if they are found in violation of the act.
